Advisors

Advisors

Advisors play a critical role by supporting Complainants and Respondents throughout the process. Under the College’s Anti-Discrimination, Harassment, Retaliation, and Title IX Policy and Related Grievance Procedures, each Party may have one Advisor present during meetings and proceedings, including intake and investigative meetings.

The role of an Advisor is to support the Party, help them understand their rights, and guide them through the applicable procedures. Advisors may not actively participate in meetings or speak on behalf of a Party. However, they may request a brief pause or clarification about the process.

Who may serve as an Advisor depends on the type of matter. In Title IX cases, a Party may select any Advisor of their choosing, including an attorney or someone who is not affiliated with Providence College. In matters other than Title IX or sexual misconduct, the Advisor must be a Providence College Student or full-time Employee and may not be an attorney.

During a formal Title IX Hearing, Advisors are responsible for conducting cross-examination of the other Party and Witnesses in accordance with the established rules of decorum. The Decision-maker will determine whether each question is relevant before an answer is provided. If a Party does not have an Advisor present at a Title IX Hearing, the College will appoint an Advisor for the limited purpose of conducting cross-examination.

The College also has Title IX Confidential Advocates who can serve as both Advisors and confidential resources for Students navigating a Title IX or sexual misconduct process. Students interested in confidential support may contact the Title IX Confidential Advocate team directly.
